Tobacco and nicotine
The plant whose latin name is Nicotiana belongs to the nightshade family of plants (Solanaceae). The territory of origin of tobacco is America, but currently tobacco cultivation has spread to over 100 countries all over the world. The largest tobacco growers include China, India and Brazil.
The alkaloid nicotine is present only in tobacco. Nicotine from tobacco smoke is absorbed already in the mouth cavity (a fact which is used by pipe smokers who do not inhale the smoke) and in lungs.
Nicotine is the main reason for smoking. In central nervous system, nicotine is binding on receptors that cause pleasant feelings, relaxation and short-term improved concentration.
